Converting a pitch to degrees takes one line of trigonometry. The question that matters more on site is what you are allowed to put on it. Below 2:12 asphalt shingles are not permitted at all, and between 2:12 and 4:12 they require two layers of underlayment — a requirement that is missed often enough to be a common warranty claim. This calculator does the conversion and tells you which side of those thresholds you are on.

Why 2:12 and 4:12 are the thresholds
Asphalt shingles are a water-shedding system, not a waterproof one. Each course overlaps the one below, and water runs down the surface and off the eave. Nothing about that assembly is sealed.
That works while water moves fast enough to leave before it finds a way sideways. As slope decreases, water slows, dwells longer on the surface and has more opportunity to be driven up under a course by wind or capillary action.
Below 2:12 the margin disappears and shingles are simply not permitted. That is low-slope roofing, and it needs a membrane system — modified bitumen, TPO, EPDM or standing seam metal — where the waterproofing does not depend on gravity.
Between 2:12 and 4:12 shingles are allowed but the assembly needs a second line of defence, which is why IRC R905.2 and every manufacturer require two layers of underlayment in that range. The underlayment stops what gets past the shingles.
Above 4:12 water leaves fast enough that a single layer suffices. This is the ordinary case and where most residential roofs sit.
Installing a single layer on a 3:12 roof is a common and expensive error: it passes visual inspection, works for several years, and voids the warranty precisely when a claim is made.
The area multiplier and where money is lost
The multiplier is the square root of one plus the pitch ratio squared, and it converts building footprint into actual roof surface. It is the most financially consequential number on this page.
A 6:12 roof has 11.8 percent more surface than the ground it covers. An 8:12 has 20.2 percent more. A 12:12 has 41.4 percent more. Ordering shingles off the floor plan on a steep roof means running short by an amount that is not close to a rounding error.
It applies to everything sold by area: shingles, underlayment, sheathing, ice and water barrier, and insulation where it follows the roof plane.
Steeper roofs cost more per square foot of building in labour as well, because work above roughly 6:12 needs staging, roof jacks or fall arrest and proceeds more slowly. Roofing estimates commonly carry a steep-slope surcharge starting around 7:12 and rising sharply above 9:12.
For material takeoff the footprint used must include overhangs, since the roof extends past the walls. Using the building outline alone undercounts by the eave and rake projections on every side.
Measuring pitch on a finished roof
Three methods, in decreasing order of reliability.
From inside the attic is best, if you have access. Hold a level horizontally against the underside of a rafter, mark 12 inches along it, and measure straight down from that mark to the rafter. That vertical distance is the rise per foot. Nothing is in the way and you are not on a roof.
From a gable end works without attic access. Hold the level against the rake board or the visible edge of the roof line and take the same 12 inch measurement. Slightly less accurate because the rake board may not follow the roof plane exactly.
A phone inclinometer against a rafter or the roof surface gives degrees directly, which the measured or degrees mode on this calculator converts. It is fast and adequate for estimating, though phone sensors vary and it is worth checking against a known level surface first.
What does not work is estimating by eye. People consistently overestimate steep roofs and underestimate shallow ones, and the difference between 3:12 and 4:12 — which decides whether you need double underlayment — is not visually obvious.

What does 6/12 pitch mean?
The roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. It is a ratio, not a measurement of the rafter, which is why a 6/12 roof on a wider building is taller but the same pitch.

Why does the area multiplier matter?
Because roofing is bought by sloped area, not footprint. A 6:12 roof has about 12% more surface than the building beneath it, and a 12:12 roof has 41% more. Ordering off the footprint is how jobs come up short.
